Additional Financial Resources

An emergency veterinary bill can be an impossible financial burden for someone living paycheck-to-paycheck. Urgent veterinary care can quickly amount to thousands of dollars. During these medical crises, if a pet owner does not have the funds, their veterinarian will suggest euthanasia. These owners cherish their pets as family. Owners in this situation struggle with feelings of fear, despair, and guilt over not having the funds available. When a pet dies, no matter what the case, it’s heartbreaking. Some would say, “It’s just an animal,” but anyone who has truly loved a pet knows this loss can be as hard as losing a close human friend or family member.

We are here to help. But if we can’t, here are additional resources:

Additional Tips for Obtaining Funds for Emergency Medical Care

Before leaving the veterinary hospital, apply for Care Credit and Scratchpay

  • This will be required to apply for financial assistance, and you must use any funds you do obtain in order to qualify for a grant or you may qualify for all necessary funds for treatment

  • Take a screenshot/photo of the results of your application to Care Credit and Scratchpay

If you leave the veterinary hospital with your pet prior to obtaining medical care for an emergency condition, have a plan in place.

  • Obtain a copy of your medical records from the veterinarian

  • Although your pet will need another exam at any other veterinary hospital this may help speed treatment

  • Ask for full medical records and not just the discharge instructions. This document will be needed to apply for financial assistance

Make an appointment immediately with the low-cost veterinary care option nearest to you in the list below. These hospitals are experienced to help you find funds for your pet’s care.

  • Low-cost clinics can provide care to owners with more limited funds. Please schedule an appointment at your closest option within the next 24 hours.

  • You will NOT be able to receive a grant from SAGE Compassion for Animals until you visit the veterinarian that will be doing the procedure, pay their initial exam fee, and get an estimate from them. DO NOT wait to schedule an appointment.

Prolonged time without medical care can make your pet's condition worse, can limit your treatment options and/or make care even more expensive.
